When to Put Up an Owl Box: Timing for North American Owls

A naturalist's guide to the right time to install an owl nest box - late autumn for most species, before squirrels select winter dens, in time for owl scouting in late winter.

01 / EXPLORE THE STORY

Let the species and site set the schedule.

Choose a planning step. A calendar date alone cannot tell you whether a box is suitable or safe to install.

Start with the local owl species.

Box design and habitat differ among owl species. Check which species occurs locally before choosing a plan or a site.

Look beyond the mounting point.

For Barn Owls in the UK and Ireland, the Barn Owl Trust recommends open countryside, visible entrances and avoiding sites near fast, unscreened roads.

Aim to work before likely use.

Install while the site is clearly unoccupied, with safe access and local guidance. Breeding and roosting can vary by species and place, so never rely on a fixed date to assume a box is empty.

October planning notes.

The best time to put up an owl nest box is October or early November - before squirrels select winter dens, with enough lead time for the box to weather and look “lived-in” before owls scout in January and February. Specific timing depends on which owl you’re targeting: Screech Owls and Saw-whets scout earliest; Barn Owls a few weeks later. The wrong time to install is right at owl scouting season - the freshly-cut wood smell deters them.

The seasonal window, by species

  • Eastern Screech Owl - scouts January-February. Install October-November.
  • Northern Saw-whet Owl - scouts January-February. Install October-November.
  • Barred Owl - scouts February-March. Install November-December.
  • Barn Owl - scouts March-April; nests later. Install November-January.
  • American Kestrel (not strictly an owl but similar boxes) - scouts February-March. Install November.

The autumn install gives the box time to weather, develop the silvery patina that owls prefer, and become inconspicuous to passing predators.

Why October specifically

October works because:

  1. Squirrels haven’t selected winter dens yet - they choose dens in late November.
  2. Owls aren’t scouting yet - they begin in December at earliest.
  3. Weather still allows safe installation - ladders aren’t on ice yet.
  4. Two months of weathering before scouting starts.

The most common mistake is installing in spring (just before owl breeding). By then, breeders have already committed to other sites; the box sits empty for a year.

What if you missed the autumn window?

Install whenever you can. A box installed in spring will probably get occupied by:

  • First year: squirrels, or starlings, or nothing.
  • Second year: target owl, if conditions are right.

Don’t wait a year hoping for the perfect autumn. Install now and accept the first season may be a write-off.

02 / A CAREFUL FIELD CHECK

Is this site ready?

Tick each planning step you have completed. This is a planning prompt, not a clearance to disturb wildlife.

First identify the local species and a suitable, safe site. Install only when the site is unoccupied and work is lawful.

Other timing considerations

  • Predator-proof before installing. A box installed without baffles and a tree-pole separation will be a squirrel box. See our squirrel-proofing guide.
  • Clean every spring. Remove old nesting material once breeding season ends (usually June). Owls dislike accumulated debris from previous broods.
  • Don’t move the box between seasons. Once owls accept a site, they return for many years.

Mounting timing detail

The actual mount work is best done on a:

  • Cool, dry day - safer on ladders, comfortable for the installer.
  • No-wind day - the ladder and the box both stay stable.
  • Daytime - obvious but worth saying; never mount at dusk when owls are active.

A two-person install is faster and safer than going solo. Plan accordingly.

No. 01

Audubon Torpedo Squirrel Baffle

Install with the baffle, not after.

The single biggest mistake people make is installing the box first and adding squirrel defences later. By then squirrels have moved in. Install the box AND the baffle in the same October session for owl-only access from day one.

  • Steel torpedo baffle, 6.125 inches diameter
  • Fits standard nest box poles
  • Squirrels can't grip or climb past

The bottom line

October-November is the right time to put up an owl box. Install with squirrel defences from day one. Don’t wait a year if you missed the window - install now.
